As any welder knows, there are certain steps you must take to ensure that your welding job is solid and clean. Sure, MIG welding techniques may vary from individual to individual. But, we find that certain steps are necessary and must be taken each time in order to guarantee a quality weld.
Stay Safe When MIG Welding
One step involves safety. Most welders know how important safety precautions are when it comes to welding. I certainly hope all welders take the time to ensure that they are working in a safe environment and that all their tools function appropriately.
Beyond that, some welders begin to make what I consider to be rookie mistakes.
Any experienced welder knows that making simple mistakes while welding can have noticeable consequences. Sure, those consequences may not harm anyone or anything.
But, they will certainly affect the quality of your weld. There are two common MIG welding mistakes that welders keep making that I feel I need to address (and hopefully put a stop to).
Today, I am discussing those two mistakes and offering some advice for how to avoid making these mistakes in the future.
I also recommend checking out an eBook called “Make Money Welding.” This book really is an excellent resource to any would-be MIG welder just learning the ropes.

Common Yet Avoidable Mig Welding Mistakes:
A common yet extremely avoidable mistake made by many a novice MIG welder is trying to weld dirty materials. If you try to weld with dirty materials, you are going to learn quickly that your weld will not be a good one. How to MIG Weld While Avoiding Mistakes
If you try to weld with dirty materials, you are going to learn quickly that your weld will not be turn out very good.
Learn from the mistakes of others and avoid attempting to weld dirty materials.
You should not weld materials that have dirt or paint on them. They must be adequately cleaned off before you begin to weld.
This means that rust, oil, dirt, and other contaminants need to be removed or you will find that you are not very successful at gas metal arc welding. Why? Because materials with contaminants will not provide a proper weld surface.
Use A Clean Surface When Attempting a MIG Welding Aluminum Project
If, for example, you attempt MIG welding aluminum or steel material that is covered in oil and contaminants, you are not going to have a clean and solid weld.
You absolutely MUST clean your dirty material until you have removed any contaminants and get down to the base material. To do this, you can use a grinder or a metal brush.
If you do not take this necessary step and proceed to weld dirty base materials, you will likely see porosity in your weld. This occurs when small pockets of gas become trapped in your welding puddle. Basically, porosity is a preventative welding defect.
Avoiding the following mistake is essentially welding basics. But, some welders miss the memo and waste their valuable time trying to weld dirty materials. As I said before, it is a common mistake made by rookie welders.
However, this can be an extremely easy mistake to avoid. The mistake has nothing to do with MIG welding techniques and everything to do with basic welding principles.Don’t be lazy; if your materials are dirty clean them! It really is that simple.

Don’t Make This Mistake With Your Gas Welder!!
Another common mistake that both novice and experienced welders sometimes make is using a welding machine that is too small to use on a large material. Come on people, this is a basic part of how to MIG weld.
As with any other project, you have to use the correct tool for the job.
Welding is no different!
You need to use a welding machine powerful enough to weld your material. While it may seem like a good idea to push your small gas welder to the max to see what it is capable of, you shouldn’t. If you are using a welder that is clearly not powerful enough to weld strong material, you will likely end up wasting time and money.
No matter how good your MIG welding techniques are, you are not going to compensate for inadequate tools. More importantly, you will not produce a very good weld if you use the wrong machine for your project. You cannot make your machine do more than it is capable of no matter how hard you try or how good
You cannot make your machine do more than it is capable of no matter how hard you try or how good of a welder you are. You will also not get a very strong, successful weld.
You MUST use the right machine for the material you are going to weld. This may seem like common sense to many of you, but a number of beginner welders push their machines to the maximum capacity only to wonder “why isn’t my weld very good?”
“This is the same idea as using the wrong MIG welding gas for your machine…don’t do it!”
This is yet another easily avoidable welding mistake. Really, the only people who should be making this mistake are those who are still trying to figure out “what is MIG welding?”
Do You Ask Yourself What is MIG Welding?
If you are only beginning to learn about welding, using the wrong sized machine for the job is excusable. If this is not your first ‘welding rodeo’, then you should already know this. Stronger and thicker materials require a stronger, more powerful welding machine.
This is the same idea as using the wrong MIG welding gas for your machine; it is avoidable so don’t do it!
If you do not own a powerful welding machine made for bigger jobs, perhaps a friend who owns one would allow you to borrow theirs. Or, you may be able to rent one from a local store until you finish the job.
Many home repair stores allow you to rent their welding machines. If you often find yourself completing bigger welding jobs, it may be worthwhile to invest in a more powerful welding machine. The initial purchase could very well end up paying for itself.
But please, refrain from using a small welding machine on a large job. This is basic welding knowledge, people. Yet, I see many welders make this mistake, and it is certainly an easily avoidable mistake.
